Ferris & Co. in Pittsburgh, built a gigantic revolving wheel for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago in an attempt to eclipse the Eiffel Tower, built for the previous World’s Fair. It was over 264 feet high and was capable of carrying more than 2,000 passengers at a time. Today, there are thousands of Ferris Wheels operating at parks and fairs in southwestern Pennsylvania and around the world.
