Today, the beautifully restored Byham hosts a plethora of productions, including Menopause the Musical, Raul Malo and live tapings of popular NPR radio shows, such as Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! The Harris Theater was the first theater in Pittsburgh to commercially show “art movies.” Operated by Pittsburgh Filmmakers since 1995, the theater was named after John P Harris, co-founder of the Nickelodeon, the first theater in the country . solely dedicated to the showing of motion pictures. Recent films at the 200-seat movie-lovers’ theater include films by Akira Kurosawa, classics like White Christmas and camp faves such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. GO! Designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, the 650-seat O’Reilly Theater is the only downtown performance venue that features a thrust stage, surrounded by the audience on three sides. Home to the Pittsburgh Public Theater whose 2008 season includes The Comedy of Errors, Rabbit Hole and The Odd Couple. As the newest performance venue in the Cultural District, the intimate, 265-seat Cabaret at Theater Square is the spot for a great night out. From madly inventive musical revues and singer-songwriters, to jazz and beer and wine tasting, the Cabaret Theater is a blast. Other great theaters outside of the Cultural District can be easily found, too. Visit City Theatre, on Pittsburgh’s South Side, for dynamic performances, or check out the New Hazlett Theater on the North Shore and the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. Art Museum Mania You’ll want to spend more than 15 minutes at the The Andy Warhol Museum, the “art that dares” museum that celebrates the life and work of one of Pop Art’s founding fathers.
