Pittsburgh 2008 Official Visitors Guide - (Page 16) What’s Out There ‘Wright’ Where It’s At! GO! For architectural lovers, no visit to Pittsburgh is complete without a side trip to the beautiful Laurel Highlands to see what could be called the Frank Lloyd Wright Trifecta of Perfection. That’s right, three distinctly styled homes designed by the legendary architect are open for public tours – and now you can even stay overnight in one of them! The architectural must-see is Fallingwater, named one of the “Seven Wonders” by the Washington Post and with good reason. A work of international significance, Fallingwater is one of Wright’s most inspired works – where the dramatic setting and the architect’s fully mature talent come together to set the stage for architectural greatness. Just a few miles southwest of Wright’s masterpiece Fallingwater, and high atop a bluff overlooking the Youghiogheny River Gorge, stands the stunning House on Kentuck Knob. A great believer in the beauty of natural materials, Wright combined the native fieldstone, so abundant throughout the property, with tidewater red cypress to create a chorus of color and texture that replicates the surrounding landscape. And, then retire – that is sleep – and talk about all the Wright things in the Duncan House. This 1957 Usonian home was designed by Wright and moved here from Illinois to a 125-acre site that was designed by Wright’s apprentice, Peter Berndston, in the late 1960s. Polymath Park Resort includes two other Berndston-designed guest homes. The Duncan House is one of only four Frank Lloyd Wright designs in the country where guests may actually stay overnight and experience the Wright lifestyle. PLAY TIME The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh believes that kids should “play with real stuff,” a philosophy that you’ll see in action throughout the award-winning museum. Sing along with King Friday in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and then batten down the hatches because you’re sure to learn something about boat design, river navigation and plumbing in Waterplay. 1-877-LOVE PGH 16
