Pittsburgh 2008 Official Visitors Guide - (Page 18) What’s Out There Birds! Birds! Birds! GO! Welcome to the National Aviary, the nation’s premier bird zoo. Located in historic North Side’s West Park, the Aviary is home to 800+ birds of more than 200 species. The large walk-through exhibits create an experience unlike any other. Stop in at the new Lories and Friends exhibit and you’ll have the birds eating out of your hand! On the Water See Pittsburgh in a whole new light – from the water! You’ll love it! From Station Square, set sail on a variety of excursions, such as a Gateway Clipper cruise or a Just Ducky tour on a WWII amphibious vehicle. Cruise lengths vary. If you’d rather be in the water, visit Sandcastle’s wild and wet summer playground, just minutes from the Golden Triangle. You’ll find tube slides, wave pools and swimming pools. Slip into something more comfortable – like an inner tube – as you drift down the Lazy River, one-quarter mile of floating fun! Make New Memories Kennywood offers the thrills and chills of a state-of-the-art amusement park, while retaining the charm of an old-time amusement park. And there’s nothing better than riding the Thunderbolt roller coaster at night, except perhaps the thrill of the double dip on the Jack Rabbit. (Eating Potato Patch fries, with cheese, comes in right behind!) You can go back in time at this National Historic Landmark by riding the The Whip in Lost Kennywood. The kids will love Kiddieland and you’ll love making new memories at this premier amusement park! (Look for the statue of George Washington that reminds visitors that he passed the park site with the General Braddock expedition in 1755!) No trip to Pittsburgh would be complete without a ride in one of the historic inclines, either the Duquesne or Monongahela Incline, to the top of Mt. Washington. Don’t forget your camera because you’ll have a picture-perfect bird’s-eye view of the city and rivers below … one of the world’s best views! MUST SEE Family District It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. And, the spirit of Pittsburgh’s very own Mister Rogers can be felt in the very special North Side neighborhood, home of Pittsburgh’s Family District. Yes, there’s a little something for everyone in The Family District. From the National Aviary and Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to Carnegie Science Center and the Mattress Factory. Feeling more adventurous? Rent a kayak, canoe or even a hydrobike from Kayak Pittsburgh-Venture Outdoors, near PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 1-877-LOVE PGH 18
