Pittsburgh 2008 Official Visitors Guide - (Page 19) What’s Out There Looking Ahead to 2009 GO! Named after native Pittsburgh literary genius, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture will be located in the heart of downtown, near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The center, which is slated to open in spring 2009, will feature Pittsburgh’s contributions to African-American art, culture and history. The 80,000-square-foot facility includes a 500-seat theater, galleries and more. Game On Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports. It’s a town that bleeds black and gold, and the only city with all of its professional teams sporting the same colors. Head to Heinz Field for a Steelers or University of Pittsburgh Panthers football game. No summertime visit is complete without a trip to PNC Park to watch the Pirates. Watch a Penguins power play at Mellon Arena, the first retractable domed building in the world. (Real fanatics take note: Tours of Heinz Field and PNC Park are available.) And, people around the globe have seen what a great city this is as Pittsburgh has hosted national sporting events, including the 2005 Citgo Bassmaster Classic, the 2006 MLB All-Star Game and the 2007 U.S. Open Golf Championship. Venture Outdoors That’s right. Go ahead and venture outdoors because Venture Outdoors regularly sponsors outdoor adventures on water and land. Its popular Kayak Pittsburgh program (located just below PNC Park on the Allegheny River) lets you rent solo and tandem kayaks, canoes and even hydrobikes. On land, it’s trail city. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a spectacular pedestrian and bicycle trail system that stretches for many miles, connecting dozens of neighborhoods and communities. This wonderful greenway, which runs for 21 miles along both sides of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, is an almost complete public route for cyclists, walkers, runners, and in some places, rollerbladers. 1-877-LOVE PGH 19
