Pittsburgh 2008 Official Visitors Guide - (Page 46) Let’s Dish Food Facts, Dining & Nightlife Options Clark Bar – The D.L. Clark Company was born in 1886 in two back rooms of a house in what is now Pittsburgh’s North Side. Until recently, Clark Bars were still manufactured at a factory on the North Side, just across the parking lot from Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Devonshire Sandwich – This open-face chicken or turkey sandwich was invented in Pittsburgh by Frank Blandi in 1936 at his first restaurant, The Stratford, in the east end of Pittsburgh. Blandi also started several other area restaurants, including Le Mont on Mt. Washington. You may have seen the Devonshire featured recently on the Food Network. When it comes to creating unusual food items, Pittsburgh takes the cake! Here is just a sampling of Pittsburgh treats that people all over the world love to eat. Heinz Ketchup – Heinz products are the most visible of Pittsburgh’s culinary traditions. Introduced in 1876, Heinz Ketchup is a brand known round the world. Little known fact: Henry J. Heinz was such a competitive businessman that in the 1880s, he bought a competitor’s products and equipment and sank them in the Allegheny River. Big Mac – Introduced by McDonald’s in 1968, the Big Mac was the brainchild of Jim Delligatti, one of Ray Kroc’s earliest franchisees who operated a dozen stores in the Pittsburgh area. Delligatti’s discovery marked the legend of “two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.” The Primanti Sandwich – Long a Pittsburgh institution, the delicious Primanti Brothers sandwich was ordered for the first time in the 1930s in the original Strip District restaurant, which is still operating today. The sandwich comes with fries and slaw. What makes it so special? The fries and slaw are served inside the sandwich, not on the side. Today, there are 14 Primanti Brothers restaurants in Pittsburgh and two in Florida. No visit to Pittsburgh is complete without a visit to Primanti’s. 1-877-LOVE PGH 46
