Pittsburgh was officially named 250 years ago – in November 1758 – when a British and colonial army, led by General John Forbes, occupied the ruins of Fort Duquesne. Forbes named the new settlement at the confluence of three rivers after the British Secretary of State William Pitt. And, so marks the birth of Pittsburgh, America’s Most Livable City. To celebrate the birth of the city, the Pittsburgh region has an elaborate, year-long celebration in store. From the completion of the Great Allegheny Passage to the re-opening of the transformed Point State Park, from reunions to other special events, the Pittsburgh region celebrates its 250th birthday in a big way.
