AREA OVERVIEW What Kitty Hawk is to aviation, the historic town of Honesdale is to the railroad. With buildings on Main Street dating back to the 1800s, the town is filled with charming shops and fine restaurants. Other key towns in the area include Waymart, Lake Ariel, White Mills and Hawley. Named after Irad Hawley, the first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, the borough is a haven for antiques shoppers searching for that perfect piece. HISTORY AND HERITAGE On August 8, 1829, the Stourbridge Lion became the first locomotive to run on a commercial track. Take in the Wayne County Historical Society Museum in Honesdale where a scale replica of this engine sits. CULTURAL ASSETS The region is historically known for its cut glass. World-renowned French glassmaker Christian Dorflinger first set up shop in 1862 in White Mills, now home to the Dorflinger Glass Museum and Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary.
