Of course, hiking isn’t the only outdoor activity the Pocono Mountains has to offer. Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy biking, horseback riding, fishing, water skiing, golfing and rafting, among others. Isn’t it time you enjoyed the outdoors in the Pocono Mountains? THE LEHIGH GORGE TRAIL IS A 25-MILE RAIL-TRAIL THAT OUTSIDE MAGAZINE NAMED ONE OF THE “50 BEST RAMBLES IN AMERICA.” POCONO MOUNTAINS BY LAND Ground level – hiking, biking, horseback riding – is one of the best ways to experience the 2,400-square miles that are the Pocono Mountains. When you’re ready to venture beyond the cul-de-sac, take a ride along the biking/ hiking McDade trail in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. (Two segments are finished – one five miles and one 2.7 miles – but when complete, the recreational trail will stretch 37 miles.) Looking for a little more terrain and less pavement? Jim Thorpe has off-road rides at varying levels of difficulty. Whether looking for a hilly ridge ride (Mauch Chunk Ridge), a mellow trail with rocky washed-out terrain (Switchback Trail) or vertigo-inducing views (Buzzards’ Point), the Jim Thorpe area has it. It also has a 25-mile rail-trail ride down the Lehigh Gorge Trail that Outside magazine named one of the “50 best rambles in America.” While the views of the Water Gap from the trail around Mount Minsi are the stuff postcards are made of, the Pocono Mountains also have nearly 250 other miles of great hiking trails. Tobyhanna State Park has a short lake loop popular with families. Boulder Field in Hickory Run State Park (even though it is more “hopping” than “hiking”) is like nothing else you’ll ever see.
