Picturesque natural resources, culturally significant works of art, amazing pieces of architecture, and one-of-a-kind events are peppered throughout the county. The beauty stretches from the vast, publicly accessible beaches of Lake Michigan to the outlying rolling farmlands, and pleasure unfolds from the art museum and galleries to the exceptional shopping, recreational and dining experiences. While the majority of Racine County’s treasures are readily available for residents and visitors, many sites and activities take a little extra effort and planning in order to enjoy. We’ve unveiled and identified 12 people, places or things that help make Racine County unique. Here are a dozen stops you won’t want to skip on your visit to our Treasure Island in the southeastern corner of Wisconsin. Kringle Tours Hungry or not, here we come! Local bakers tantalize visitors’ palates by giving kringle and bakery tours to groups. Learn about kringle’s origin, ingredients and flavors before sampling this delicious Danish pastry, which has put Racine County on the world’s culinary map of excellence. Don’t forget to take a few extra kringles home with you. Wind Point Lighthouse Perched 112 feet above the lake, the Wind Point Lighthouse was erected in 1880. The historic beacon welcomes more than 20,000 visitors each year. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It stretches 22 feet wide at its base and just 7 feet wide at the top. Guests can navigate up the 144 steps, where they will be treated to the most spectacular view in Racine County. The Fog Horn House Maritime Museum adjacent to the lighthouse is open Wednesday through Sundays 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. in the months of June through October. This building still has the original horns above its doors, facing the lake. Inside, learn about the maritime history of Lake Michigan and shipwrecks.
