Racine County 2008 Visitors Guide - (Page 8) HIDDEN TREASURES SC Johnson Administration Building Tour and the Golden Rondelle Theater Racine County houses the headquarters of SC Johnson-A Family Company. Tours of the company’s Frank Lloyd Wright designed Administration Building are offered only on Fridays. The Administration Building was the largest commercial project designed by Wright. Its Great Workroom encompasses nearly onehalf acre of workable floor space. The room’s design, with golf-tee shaped, soaring columns, was cited among the most advanced structural supports in modern architecture. The 40-minute walking tour highlights the building’s architectural features and gives an overview of SC Johnson. The Golden Rondelle Theater, which shares the corporate campus at 1525 Howe St. in Racine, was constructed for the SC Johnson Wax pavilion at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair. It was brought back to Racine and placed on a new base, which was designed by the Taliesin Associate Architects to complement the company’s existing buildings. The films, “Carnuba, A Son’s Memoir” and the award-winning “To Be Alive” are shown free of charge. Please call 262-260-2154 to make your required reservations. While the grounds are open for year-round enjoyment, public tours of the majestic, renovated lighthouse are limited to five days a year. The 2008 tour dates are the first Sunday of each month, June through October, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under the age of 6 years are not allowed in the lighthouse. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Carolyn at 262-639-2026. Fred Hermes’ Basement Bijou One of the county’s most unique musical treasures is hidden underground. A 20-foot ceiling tops off Fred Hermes’ Basement Bijou, but there is no way to contain the pleasure visitors receive from this experience. The custom-built, two-story basement resembles the cherished movie palaces of days gone by when ornate columns soared from floor to ceiling and chandeliers shimmered overhead. The main attraction of the 150-seat theater is a 2,500-pipe Wurlitzer organ that dates back to 1926. It is the largest five manual organ the company ever made. Hermes performs on the elaborate organ that imitates the sounds of all the instruments in the orchestra and then some. Some of the pipes are straight while others are flared or looped in the center. Some are metal, and others are wood. A full complement of real percussion instruments — cymbals, a marimba, a harp, a Ozella’s Quilt Code Find your way to the Racine Arts Council (RAC), 505 Sixth St., in Downtown Racine, and you’ll see how slaves used handstiched symbols to navigate their way to freedom. The permanent exhibit, Ozella’s Story: An Underground Railroad Quilt Code, utilizes artistic interpretation to recreate communication tools used by slaves and abolitionists. The display is based on Ozella’s Underground Railroad story, as written in the book, “Hidden in Plain View”, by Jacqueline Tobin. The patterned quilts on display at the RAC mimic those hung on clotheslines or in windows, and the specific symbols, such as a bear’s paw or wagon wheel, silently directed slaves on their journeys. RAC is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 12 until 4 p.m., and there is no fee to view the Ozella’s Quilt Code exhibit. Modine-Benstead Observatory This nighttime adventure is out of this world. The ModineBenstead Observatory is located at the intersection of Highway A and 63rd Drive in Union Grove. View the celestial galaxies through magnificent telescopes located in domed observatories or simply enjoy the view from the observation deck. Seasonal, limited viewing opportunities are available. 8 Fred Hermes’ custom-built, two-story basement resembles the cherished movie palaces of days gone by when ornate columns soared from floor to ceiling and chandeliers shimmered overhead. www.racinecvb.org • Racine County 2008 Visitors Guide • 1-800-C-RACINE http://www.racinecvb.org
