Visit Raleigh 2018 | Official Guide to Raleigh, Cary and Wake County - 10
A hectic kitchen might seem like a long way from the
glamour of Hollywood, but when the James Beard
Foundation announces the list of chef and restaurant
semifinalists for their annual awards, the excitement is
just as real as the Oscars. And in Raleigh, the winner is...
everyone who joins us for an outstanding meal!
Crawford and Son
Having one James Beard Award nominee is a huge
accomplishment for any city. Having three in the same year is
off-the-charts phenomenal. It's hats (or toques) off as we salute
these talented, hard-working chefs and restaurants.
Brewery Bhavana-the brewery, bookstore, flower shop and dim sum restaurant in
downtown Raleigh-has been nominated for Best New Restaurant. Opened in April
2017, Brewery Bhavana has been racking up accolades, including being named one
of the 10 best new restaurants in America by Bon Appétit.
Chef Ashley Christensen
Chef Ashley Christensen, whose downtown Raleigh culinary empire now spans
five eating and drinking establishments, is up for Outstanding Chef-the highest
individual honor for a chef-for the second year in a row. She was also named
The News & Observer's Tar Heel of the Year.
Chef Cheetie Kumar
Rockstar chef Cheetie Kumar (co-owner of Garland, Neptunes Parlour and KINGS-
and member of local band Birds of Avalon) earned a second consecutive JBA
nomination for Best Chef: Southeast. Southern Living named her one of "30 Women
Moving Southern Food Forward."
Chef Steven Devereaux Greene
Chef Steven Greene was voted a semifinalist for the Best Chef: Southeast by the
James Beard Foundation in 2016 and 2017. His tenure with The Umstead Hotel
and Spa began in 2009 after leaving his namesake restaurant Devereaux's.
Master baker Lionel Vatinet
Recognized by the James Beard Foundation as a semifinalist for Outstanding Baker
in 2015, master baker Lionel Vatinet is a force in American artisanal bread-baking for
more than 25 years. When not at his La Farm Bakery, he can be found traveling the
world teaching as a consultant to well-known bread brands.

Crawford and Son
When Scott Crawford talks about his
early days in the food industry, he admits
that it wasn't his passion... yet. But over
the years of working as a server and a
bartender, the passion developed and
began to burn at an intense level.
Today Scott is acclaimed not only in
Raleigh but also throughout the state
and Mid-Atlantic region. He is a five-time
James Beard Foundation semifinalist for
Best Chef: Southeast. His Crawford and
Son was also selected as "Restaurant
of the Year" by The News & Observer's
restaurant critic Greg Cox who noted
"straightforward, honest food that ranges
from the familiar to the unexpected."
When the season is right you can look
for menu items like the Apple and Turnip
Salad with Ashe County Romano Dressing
and Crunchy Grains. We were able to
get the recipe, and you can find it on our
website. Just search for Scott Crawford.
