A BOLD EXAMPLE
OF ORIGINALLY RALEIGH
Who would have thought it was a good idea
to put a bookstore, a brewery, a flower shop
and a dim sum restaurant all under one roof?
It might seem an odd combination, and it
probably wouldn't replicate anywhere else. But
in Raleigh, it just works.
Before you can understand what exists today,
you need to understand what happened
before, the sacrifices and passions that have
melded to create a harmonious union.
Brewery Bhavana is the creative vision of
brother-and-sister restaurateurs Vansana and
Vanvisa Nolintha and head brewer Patrick
Woodson. The Nolinthas also operate Bida
Manda, a Laotian restaurant next door. And it is
there that the story takes culinary root.
The Nolintha siblings emigrated from Laos at
a young age (12 and 10), leaving their parents
behind. At first, brother Vansana planned to
become a doctor and later studied design.
But it wasn't until he and his sister returned to
Laos to visit their parents that the path became
clear. He wanted to share their passion for food
and its timeless message of love by opening a
restaurant in Raleigh dedicated to his parents.
And Bida Manda, a ceremonial term for father
and mother, was born.
Vanvisa and Vansana Nolintha
Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana
It was there that the siblings met Patrick
Woodson, a home brewer who had just
returned from traveling through Laos. The
connection was powerful, and the idea for
something new began to germinate.
The result is Brewery Bhavana, a place
where diversity is embraced and creativity is
encouraged. Since the doors opened in 2017,
the accolades have been rolling in. Bon Appétit
named it one of the 10 best new restaurants in
America. Forbes took it global, calling Brewery
Bhavana one of the "10 coolest places to eat"
in the world. By the way, it was one of only two
American restaurants to make the list.
Van, Vanvisa and Patrick are a success story in
so many ways. And the real winners are the
lucky guests who visit Brewery Bhavana and
Bida Manda to share in this original vision.
