ResortQuest Presents: Seabrook Vacation Guide - (Page 4) A Private Club on a Private Island Biking, inline skating, jogging and walking are great ways to discover all that Seabrook Island has to offer. Rent a bike, pick up a map, and keep your eyes peeled for peaceful encounters with deer, raccoon, 200 species of birds, dolphin, and even an alligator. Wander the beach by horse or kayak through the island’s creeks and estuaries. Enjoy great tours by kayak, power, or chartered sail boat. Guided nature tours will open your eyes to the beauty of our Lowcountry barrier island environment. Whether you are fishing, crabbing, kayaking or beachcombing, you will get to know nature on a personal level. A distinct part of Seabrook’s appeal is its close proximity to the enchanting historic city of Charleston. Just 30 minutes away, our resort visitors can experience the time-honored city’s rich traditions and warm hospitality. A LITTLE ISLAND HISTORY Seabrook Island enjoys an intensely varied history of its own. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, and eventually discovered by English settlers, Seabrook has served for 300 years under six flags: Spanish, French, English, South Carolinian (Palmetto), Confederate and American. In 1661, Seabrook Island fell under the territory of “Carolana”, a colony spanning southern Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. The first Seabrook settlement was named “Colleton” in honor of Sir John Colleton, the founder of the Carolana colony. A line of distinguished owners held the deed for Seabrook from the 1700s’ on. The island was known as Jones Island in 1732 after Samuel Jones. In 1753, the island was renamed Simmons Island by new owner Ebenezer Simmons, whose grandson cultivated the next source of revenue on the island—cotton. In 1816, William Seabrook rechristened the property with his name and it remains so today, even as ownership continued to change. Seabrook became a natural environment for gracious living. Early planters established lavish residences on the island and from the wealth of the plantations, rich domains flourished. During the civil war, plantation families became impoverished, but their customs and tastes remain in the horse racing, quilting contests, fishing, hunting and sailing that have become a mainstay of Lowcountry life. Today, Seabrook residents ensure that the island’s natural resources and beauty are protected and maintained, and visitors delight in this Lowcountry gem, year after year, as a touch of Seabrook’s romantic past carries on into the 21st century. Seabrook has three miles of beach along the ocean and inlet. The inlet beach has a gradual slope, perfect for swimming and waterside fun. The private Beach Club is a great venue for family vacations, family reunions, weekend escapes, even honeymoons and weddings! 888-202-1341 4 Beautiful Beach Club Ride a Horse on the Beach We Deliver Bikes
