Not so long ago the mere mention of Panama City Beach would result in chants of “road trip!” as Trans Ams and Chevettes overflowing with loud and mostly obnoxious college kids would hit the road. But that’s what you were supposed to do back in your crazy college days, right? As time passes, not only does hair get a little more gray—or scarce—but vacation ideas rarely center around staying out all night at beach bars listening to live bands blasting Prince, Pat Benatar, and Van Halen. Don’t get me wrong: one of my fondest memories of Panama City was the long weekend I and some college cohorts spent at a friend’s house … while her parents were out of town, of course. Summer 2007 39
