JOE Filled to the Brim WaterSound’s latest maritime-themed community offers an inland playground for visitors and residents alike. C story by JEAN M. MCLEAN WATERSOUND 6652 E. County Hwy 30-A WaterSound, FL 32413 800-413-2363 www.watersound vacations.com oastal residents know the maritimethemed Town of WaterSound, the shingled, plank-siding upscale St. Joe development on Northwest Florida’s Highway 30-A. However, the most expansive WaterSound component is just now being unveiled, as the largest facet of this community welcomes new residents to its designated 1,400 forested acres three miles from the coast. Called simply WaterSound, this emerging core of the three-part Town of WaterSound continues the area’s established theme of early 18th and 19thcentury littoral architecture. WaterSound Beach and WaterSound West Beach became known for exteriors built to resemble New England shipbuilders’ houses modified for Southern shores. Similarly styled homes are now available in WaterSound, joining the community’s six-hole Origins Golf Course, a family-oriented fun course designed by Professional Golfer Davis Love III. WaterSound is the final phase in the overall Town of WaterSound. WaterSound Beach opened in 2001. WaterSound West Beach was launched in 2005. And now, WaterSound itself has come into its own, centered upon its Village Commons area that includes a restaurant, post office, and Town Hall meeting room. The Village Commons is the community gathering place, where residents visit to report on the day’s fishing, tomorrow’s barbeque, and the birdies—par-related or ornithological— spied on the golf course. The community’s Winter Garden, an indoor/outdoor pool and fitness facility, also promises to be a center of activity while the trail system both links communities and provides a natural respite for bikers, runners, or those who simply love to meander amongst the acreage. Tom Dodson, West Florida vice president of sales for St. Joe, says this final sector will be filled with single family traditional homes, with an architectural approach by taking “New England coastal vernacular and Southernizing it, with deep porches and overhangs.” What’s the best part of WaterSound? “It’s got lots of open spaces,” says Tom. Those spaces range from Camp Creek Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Tom Fazio that’s just a halfmile away, to the undeveloped Intracoastal Waterway. Lake Powell, the largest coastal dune lake in the U.S., is also part of the property. Completed homes, as well as lots, are available. Tom lists home sites ranging from $160,000 to $220,000, with homes starting under $600,000. St. Joe expects WaterSound to welcome those seeking permanent residence, second homes, and “seasonal splitters,” who spend the winter months in Walton County. 26 s o u t h e r n b re e z e . c o m http://www.watersoundvacations.com http://www.watersoundvacations.com http://southernbreeze.com
