editor’s letter new kids on the block Here we are back in my favorite season along the Gulf Coast: Fall. As the seasons and the leaves change, so do magazine mastheads. I am pleased to welcome new staffers to Southern Breeze. Assistant Editor Derek Bagley, a native of Wetumpka, Alabama, is a recent graduate from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Since he just received his Master’s in English, his contributions to Southern Breeze and the myriad of other publications Compass Marketing produces have been vital. You’ll also see Courtney Austin’s name on the masthead as Editorial Assistant. She joins us in her final semester at Auburn University where she is serving as our editorial intern. Her debut article about Clementine is on page 18. It does this well-worn magazine veteran good to see two eager and talented members of the next generation do so well. Thankfully their talents are matched by great attitudes and stellar work ethics. Join me in welcoming these two new additions into the fold! This issue finds us taking a tour of Biloxi, (p. 38), dodging the ghosts, goblins, and spirits of New Orleans (p. 44), submerging below the emerald green waters of Destin (p. 34), as well as exploring the man-made reef just off the coast of Alabama’s Orange Beach (p. 50). But as any Gulf Coast resident or visitor knows, the people are just as intriguing as the places, and we meet a quite of few of them in this issue. Chef Josh Daugherty shares his unique career that somehow landed him at the Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club in Santa Rosa, Florida (p.66) and artist H.C. Porter shares her unique visions of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the wake of Katrina (p. 22). You also won’t forget Deb Burst’s hard-hitting and painfully honest interview with bluesman Tab Benoit who laments the coastal erosion that is causing his Louisiana wetlands home to slowly slip away (p. 54). I think this is an article people will be talking about for a long time. FEEDBACK— NOTES FROM OUR READERS I picked up a copy of the magazine and as always remain impressed at the quality of the publication, contents, and journalistic savvy showcasing an area that I tend to fondly remember as a “quaint little Southern coastal community” unaffected or seemingly unhurried by the fast pace of today's lifestyle. It appears to have become somewhat more sophisticated than my memory serves me!!! You are doing a wonderful job as editor of this publication leaving the reader desiring more and anxiously awaiting the next issue's publication. Also, congratulations on your magazine having received the FAME award for Best Series of Events for the Wine and Culinary Festival along with the two GAMMA awards in Atlanta! WOW! Quite impressive! Now off to the Big Screen with your “baby” making its first appearance in The Better Man! I can't wait to see it and will with a watchful eye check out the set decor!
