C 60 s o u t h e r n b re e z e . c o m Another family-friendly summer program is the drama camp. Camp Showtime offers multiple sessions per summer, teaching children about theater. At the close of the session, each budding actor gets a DVD of his or her performance. The theater presents two major indoor productions each summer. In 2007, these included An Evening with Chekov to the ominously titled The Underpants. From its beginning, Seaside Rep has focused on bringing in talent from all over. In 2007, the Gulf Coast Comedy Festival, held in July, presented stand-up, improv, and sketch comedy with nationally known performers. Roger Hailes, a popular performer from New York, has been a regular guest in summer productions for the past several years. Theater in Seaside doesn’t end with Labor Day. Visitors coming for the cool fall breezes are just in time for the Autumn Playwright Festival, which always presents the work of a well-known author. In 2007, Tom Stoppard, author of The Real Thing, was featured. In 2008, audiences will see Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night. Craige’s vision for Seaside Rep is an ambitious one—to develop a world-class original theater, making the theater itself a destination rather than an amenity. The ideal result would be a 100–150-seat theater coupled with an outside space lending itself to ticketing admissions. The foundation of his plan is an ongoing schedule of performances CRAIGE’S VISION FOR SEASIDE REP IS AN AMBITIOUS ONE—TO DEVELOP A WORLD-CLASS ORIGINAL THEATER, MAKING THE THEATRE ITSELF A DESTINATION RATHER THAN AN AMENITY. around which visitors can plan their trips. The theater’s major presentations always include a spring show in March and April, and a summer show which runs for seven weeks—in addition to the children’s shows, film festivals, and special performances which round out the schedule. For a theater that supports itself through corporate sponsorships and memberships as well as ticket sales, it is a bold vision, but Craige believes that rapid development in the Seaside area makes it feasible. “The area is growing exponentially. It’s hard to anticipate what it will look like in the next ten years. By that time, I think we will have reached critical mass.” SEASIDE REPERTORY THEATRE Scenic Highway 30A Seaside, FL www.seaside.org 850-231-0733 IMAGES THIS PAGE COURTESY OF SEASIDE REPERTORY THEATRE. http://www.seaside.org http://southernbreeze.com
