While some restaurants may say that “this is not your father’s steakhouse,” BR Prime revels in its traditional surroundings albeit with a decidedly elegant ambiance. For starters, hope that the lobster tempura is on the menu for your visit. Using South African lobster that puts Maine lobsters to shame by sheer volume, this dish is served with a variety of sauces for dipping and would make a meal unto itself. Wash down the succulent lobster meat with a mint julep from the bar a perfect combination! Satisfy the seafood lover in you with their blackened snapper and bacon/honey cornbread with crawfish, crab, chorizo, and yellow tomato cream sauce. If you’re in Biloxi, do yourself a favor and stop in and see the folks at Shady’s. With both a Creole chef and a Thai cook on staff, if there’s nothing on the menu you like, then you’re not very hungry! Located in a very unassuming building on Pass Road in the heart of Biloxi, Shady’s bills itself as “New World Cuisine” which apparently means that once you walk through the doors, you’ve entered a whole new world! You can’t go wrong by starting off with a bowl of Shady’s take on gumbo. Dark as coffee and topped with a dollop of rice, crawfish, and crab claws, Shady’s gumbo is a Cajun feast in a bowl! As a lover of Thai cuisine, I was very psyched to find Pad Thai on the menu and I ordered it with chicken. The Thai cook knew I lived in New York City so she made it a tad spicier than normal, but that was fine with me as I relished those overheated Asian spices I hadn’t sampled in a while. Shady’s has an atmosphere that is equal parts family restaurant—big tables, outside dining—and sports lounge—huge, flat screen TVs and a 20-ft. bar—so no matter what you’re in the mood for, food wise or atmosphere wise, Shady’s has it. Throw in some of Shady’s specialty potent potables and you are ensured an awesome meal with great drinks and a place you’ll come back to time and time again.—MARK A. Beach Blvd., Gulfport www.vrazels.com, 228-863-2229 Vrazel’s is different from many seafood restaurants located near the water—there are few fried items; the tablecloths are white; and the servers are clad in tuxedos. Vrazel’s is an old-school finedining restaurant with an old-school chef, the Culinary Institute of America-trained Bill Vrazel, who presents traditional coastal dishes in an elegant atmosphere across the street from the beach. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the restaurant, but nine months later it reopened with more space, new tables and chairs, and the same menu featuring favorites like Eggplant LaRosa—eggplant, Gulf shrimp, crabmeat and cheese baked in a casserole dish—and Stuffed Red Snapper Bay St. Louis, stuffed with a crabmeat and shrimp dressing and broiled in butter. These rich, delicious dishes, served with freshly baked, hot loaves of French bread, have made Vrazel’s a beloved dining destination for 20 years.
