South Carolina Smiles and Places 2008 Official Vacation Guide - (Page 22) A Family Affair For 20 years, Winton and Rosa Eugéne have been delighting collectors across the country with pottery that’s as functional as it is uniquely beautiful. The self-taught artists, whose work has been featured in Southern Living magazine, make beautiful stoneware jars, pitchers, vases and more in their studio/gallery in Cowpens, SC. Their work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the state. One of the elements that excites patrons is Winton’s unique designs, often featuring carved, painted or raised faces, which spotlight his African-American heritage and the shared heritage of humankind. Rosa’s colorful glazes in blues, golds, greens and blacks are precisely measured and hand-applied. The Eugénes stumbled upon their vocation by accident. He’s a former hog farmer who decided to experiment with a pottery wheel. She’s an ex-nurse who tagged along for the ride and got hooked herself. Collectors of their pottery are very glad the Eugénes’ adventurous spirit got the better of them.
