South Carolina Smiles and Places 2008 Official Vacation Guide - (Page 37) IN THE MOOD FOR FINE DINING Gerard’s sits in one of the many brick buildings that outline Greer’s historic downtown. Stroll up to the entrance on the brick walkway and prepare to be greeted by the hostess, who will show you to your table and prepare you for an excellent Italian meal. With songs from America, Jim Croce and Steely Dan softly playing in the background, the white-tablecloth restaurant offers an upscale, fine-dining experience in an environment that is comfortable and inviting. Both lunch and dinner menus include a number of entrees that feature fresh seafood, pasta, veal and chicken. A sample dinner might include seafood bisque as a starter, African lobster tail with fettuccine carbonara and asparagus as an entrée and a traditional tiramisu for dessert. I overheard a member of the very knowledgeable and friendly wait staff joke that everything at Gerard’s is calorie-free, which is nice, because it’s impossible to resist the urge to stay a bit longer and savor a slice of the Key Lime pie. Helpful hint: Leave your jeans at home as they are not allowed in the dining room. At any given time you can see Gerard, Mary and Mac in their respective restaurants, happily serving the even happier patrons. FIND CONTEMPORARY SOUTHERN CUISINE AT THE COTTAGE Mary’s at Falls Cottage sits in Greenville’s West End district, just a few blocks from downtown, and serves as a main entrance to Falls Park on the Reedy River. Visitors can elect to sit inside the historic two-story cottage, which was built in 1893, or outside on either the second-floor balcony or the ground-floor terrace. Both outside locations offer a fantastic view of the park, its waterfalls, gardens and greenways. Open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday and for brunch on Sunday, Mary’s menu offers a selection of salads, sandwiches, Southern side items—think wild rice and cranberry salad, potato salad and roasted vegetable salad—and homemade desserts. According to Mary’s husband, Drew, all items are made fresh daily from recipes that Mary has collected over the years. For a sample of everything Mary’s at Falls Cottage has to offer, try ordering the Fountain Inn Salad which includes a garden salad, a scoop of chicken salad, a side of broccoli salad, fresh fruit and a blueberry muffin. Helpful hint: Get there early! A long line that reaches out the door is likely on any day.
