Vermont Winter Vacation Guide 2008 - (Page 91) MOUNTAIN TOP INN MOUNTAIN VALLEY FARM SLEIGH RIDES What better way to explore the solitude and winter beauty of Vermont than bundled up with friends and family in a horse drawn sleigh? Imagine snow crunching under runners and sleigh bells jingling with the rhythm of hoof beats as you glide through Vermont’s pristine winter wonderland. An old-fashioned sleigh ride provides an opportunity to make the world slow down, create fond memories and connect with friends and family in a special environment. This season marks the fortieth anniversary of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, Inc. (VAST). As one of the oldest snowmobiling associations in the United States, it seems like only yesterday that a few brave souls met around a kitchen table in South Burlington to discuss the future of the sport of snowmobiling in Vermont. From that meeting came the roots for VAST. From a handful of local snowmobile clubs with fewer than 1,000 members was born the association that now oversees 138 locally affiliated snowmobile clubs, representing as many as 46,000 members. These clubs are responsible for the development, maintenance and grooming of more than 6,000 miles of snowmobile trails. More than eighty percent of the trails are located on private property, thanks to the generosity of approximately 8,500 landowners. Today, VAST is the only private not-forprofit organization that is totally responsible for the administration, development and maintenance of any state’s snowmobile trails program. VAST received this responsibility in 1977 after responding to the State of Vermont’s RFP for the “Management of the Statewide Snowmobile Trails Program.” VAST now operates under a cooperative agreement with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation to provide for these administrative, development and maintenance services that are the basis for Vermont’s Statewide Snowmobile Trails Program. In keeping with Yankee ingenuity and good oldfashioned partnerships and persistence, Vermont is proud to be home to one of the premier public/private recreational partnerships in the world.
