Depends on the practice. Chair time is valuable in practices seeing a lot of patients.
Wait, chair time is valuable in all practices because that is where the production occurs.
I'd rather see the room cleaned for another patient and the fi nancials done in a private
comfortable area-comfortable for the patient, that is. Most patients are thrilled to get out
of the treatment room. I can't recall one multimillion-dollar practice doing it chairside; I
am sure there are some out there. These guys are obviously getting a high percentage of
cases accepted and paid for. ■

Reviving an older thread that has some good info for a perpetual problem. I've been
wondering, now that services like OperaDDS are in the game, what changes have you found
and how have they changed the landscape? We're using route slips and radios, but they have
their challenges. ■

Not so much a revival as a resurrection. We have been using small paper routing slips for
next appointments to communicate what's next. Also, if they do not schedule, we save those
to have a call list. Actually, we have a staff meeting later this morning. Maybe I'll bounce that
around and get staff thoughts on our system. ■

Route slips were created to put all the data about a patient, their account and family in
front of the team. They were developed after computers were put in the practice because few
team members click around to learn recall status of the patient and family, status of insurance
benefits, account balance, account status, birthday, patient they referred to the practice.
You can see all the notes, medical alerts and it is a great communication tool between the
team about the patient. An example would be a change of address, a letter or card that needs
to be sent, a past due account alert, etc. It makes sure everyone knows everything they need
to know about the patient without having to interrupt each other or having to remember to
tell them.
You can transfer this data easily electronically or with a physical route slip. Everything is
right in front of you. Many practices aren't aware of all the opportunities offered by route slips
until they start using them. ■
