Albert Einstein first discussed the concept of stimulated emission in 1917, but it was Theodore Maiman
who made the first laser operate in California in 1960.1
■
The first lasers approved for dental use involved soft-tissue surgery and gingival procedures. Carbon
dioxide, argon and diode lasers were used in these procedures. Lasers offer controlled bleeding,
cutting accuracy, decreased pain and reduced bacterial exposure.2
