message board 9-Year-Old with Anterior Open Bite and Class III Tendency How should this Townie treat a young patient with a history of noncompliance? 3Mortho Member Since: 11/18/07 Post: 1 of 8 The patient is a 8.5-year-old girl with anterior open bite, tongue thrust and edge-to-edge relationship. Although she looks like Class III, she is a skeletal Class I and has a normally developed maxilla (SNA=82,3) and mandible (SNB=80) with protrusion of maxillary and mandibular incisors. She was treated with a trainer at age 7 but showed poor compliance and did not wear it enough then. How would you treat her at this age? I would appreciate your comments. ■ 3/28/2018 fesdds Member Since: 05/22/08 Post: 2 of 8 1. Myofunctional therapy and posture exercises will help improve. 2. Could use a tongue crib to physically block. 3. Could put brackets and close, and see if she adapts to there being no open bite present. Going to regret this option if she opens back up. ■ 3/28/2018 davidharnick Member Since: 08/28/02 Post: 3 of 8 Hi-unless there is a specific CC, I would just monitor. Some of the open bite/Class III is due to lower spacing and protrusion. I would introduce some myofunctional exercises. I am not a big fan of doing more MFT in the face of the open bite, but making them aware, along with some easy exercises, can be of benefit. ■ 3/28/2018 20 MAY 2018 // orthotown.comhttp://www.orthotown.com
