colleGe news coLLEGE of BusInEss AdmInIstrAtIon news Dr. Ravi Krovi Named Acting Dean of CBA The University’s Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to appoint Dr. Ravi Krovi as acting dean of the College of Business Administration, effective July 1. Outgoing business dean Dr. Raj Aggarwal will assist in the transition, and then leave on a sabbatical, returning to the UA business faculty in spring semester 2010. Krovi teaches in the areas of software quality assurance, systems analysis and Web design, and information technology management. He earned a doctorate in management information systems and decision sciences from the University of Memphis in 1993. He holds a master’s degree in computer science and statistics and an undergraduate degree in engineering. CBA Ranked by BusinessWeek Magazine For the first time in the CBA’s history, the college has been ranked by BusinessWeek Magazine as one of the best undergraduate business schools in the nation. In the magazine’s 2009 annual ranking of undergraduate business programs, the CBA was ranked 93rd and is the only business program at a public university in Northeast Ohio in the top 100. There are more than 1,600 undergraduate business programs in the U.S. The ranking of “The Best Undergraduate B-Schools” is available in the March 9, 2009 issue of BusinessWeek. The sculpture is an outstanding example of Bertoia’s later metal works that he designed to produce pleasing sound patterns when activated by wind or hand. The restored sculpture was unveiled during a program at Guzzetta Hall. The program included an illustrated talk by Val Bertoia, who helped his father create the Akron sculpture, a “Tactile Sounding” performance by percussionist Gustavo Aguilar and a reception. coLLEGE of EducAtIon news Professor to Head National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Group University of Akron education professor Dr. James Rogers was elected president of the American Association of Suicidology, an organization dedicated to those involved in suicide prevention, intervention and support. Rogers was recognized at the association’s annual conference in San Francisco. Rogers is a licensed psychologist in the state of Ohio and has specialized in the areas of suicide and disaster relief psychology. In addition, he is a professor at UA’s Collaborative Program in Counseling Psychology and an adjunct professor of behavioral sciences at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM). UA’s Collaborative Program in Counseling Psychology is a doctoral program that combines the faculty and resources of the Departments of Counseling and Psychology. Marketing Professors’ Book Named Prize Finalist A book edited by marketing professors William Hauser, Dale Lewison, Linda Orr and Andrew Thomas has been named a finalist for the 2008 American Marketing Association’s Berry-AMA Book Prize for the Best Book in Marketing. The book, “Direct Marketing in Action: Cutting-Edge Strategies for Finding and Keeping the Best Customers” (Praeger, 2007), presents a 12-stage process for launching a direct marketing campaign. crEAtIvE And profEssIonAL Arts news Restored Bertoia Sound Sculpture Unveiled “Tactile Sounding Sculpture,” created in 1976 by famed artist Harry Bertoia, returned to its home in Guzzetta Hall in April after an extensive restoration funded by the UA Women’s Committee. > Val Bertoia (l) and Frances Yates Bittle (r), then president of the Women’s Committee. | 12 |
