coLLEGE of EnGInEErInG news UA’s College of Engineering honored Dr. William Brian Arbuckle, associate professor of civil engineering, with the 2009 Outstanding Teacher Award. dr. ArBucKLE Arbuckle was selected for the award by student members of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. Arbuckle has been teaching the fundamentals of civil engineering at UA for 27 years. “[Dr. Arbuckle’s] selection for this award by the college’s honors students is a testament to his expertise in civil engineering and his commitment to his students,” says Dean of Engineering Dr. George Haritos. Steel Bridge Team Advanced to National Competition UA Steel Bridge Team (civil engineering) finished ninth out of 47 university teams in the 2009 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. The team placed in the top 10 in four of the seven scored categories of the competition. Formula SAE Team Posts Great Season The University of Akron College of Engineering Robotics Team earned four medals in its inaugural appearance at the Sixth Annual International RoboGames in San Francisco in June. Described as the world’s largest robot competition by Guinness World Records, the event attracted more than 500 contestants from 21 different countries and featured robots competing in 51 different events. UA’s team earned a first-place gold medal with its maze-bot, which met the challenge to autonomously and quickly maneuver through a maze. The team’s 340-pound combat robot “Juggernaut” | 13 | A MAgAzine for AluMni & friends of The universiT y of Akron UA Brings Home Four Medals from International RoboGames UA’s Formula SAE team finished 10th in the Formula East competition held at the Michigan International Speedway in May. UA’s newest Ph.D. program in Integrated Bioscience combines the study of biology with fields such as physics, chemistry, math and engineering to train a new generation of bioscientists. Integrated Bioscience is the first program of its kind in the State of Ohio, and one of only a few IB programs nationally that actually awards degrees. The IB program brings together more than 50 faculty from 13 departments housed in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Polymer Science and Engineering. More than 25 Ph.D. students are currently training in cutting-edge research areas such as Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Bioscience.
