DiDonato has served the Akron community since 1951, when she graduated from the St. Thomas School of Nursing. She began her career at St. Thomas Hospital and spent the majority of her 37-year career administering care at Akron General Hospital, where she retired as the head nurse in an oncology unit. After a brief retirement, she returned to the profession working as an oncology nurse in private practice for Dr. Sandra Hazra. An active volunteer, DiDonato has assumed leadership positions with the Summit County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the St. Edward Home in Fairlawn, and volunteers with Stewart’s Caring Place and the Visiting Nurse Hospice. Honors College Student Named Finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship Stan Wang was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship in Fall 2009. Wang, a recent graduate of UA’s accelerated medical B.S./M.D. program, had minors in chemistry and Spanish. He was a National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction and Cleveland Mensa Scholarship recipient. Law Professor J. Dean Carro Honored The Ohio State Bar Association’s Legal Education Committee presented Professor J. Dean Carro of the School of Law with the 2009 OSBA J. dEAn cArro Legal Education Committee Award. This award is given to an outstanding legal education professional who has contributed to Ohio law and the Ohio bar. The award was presented at the OSBA annual meeting in Cleveland. Carro has been with the University since 1978. As director of the law school’s legal clinic, Carro engages in the active practice of law. He also teaches in the areas of appellate advocacy, criminal law and criminal procedure, and supervises students in clinical education. Senior Awarded Fulbright Scholarship for Graduate Work in China Sejla Karalic, a spring 2009 graduate with a double major in political science and economics, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for 2009-10. Her research includes the study of smoking among Chinese college students. In preparation for her research, Karalic spent the summer of 2008 learning Mandarin Chinese at Middlebury College in Vermont, and has returned there again this summer to continue her studies in the language. She plans on attending law school upon returning to the United States. coLLEGE of poLYmEr scIEncE & poLYmEr EnGInEErInG news coLLEGE of nursInG news World-renowned Polymer Experts Join UA Faculty Dr. Matthew Becker has joined the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering as an associate professor of polymer science. Becker comes to UA from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md., where he served as a staff scientist and project leader of the institute’s Polymer Division for the past four years. Becker’s most recently funded research, “Integrated Technologies for Polymeric Biomaterials: RESBIO,” for which he was a co-investigator and area leader, received $5.5 million from the National Institutes of Health — National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. College of Nursing Recognizes its First Honorary Alumna Mary DiDonato was recognized as an honorary alumna of the College of Nursing on May 8 at the annual Pinning Ceremony.
