Zara harUTyUnyan (riGhT) and anna BaronayTe Tennis Team Nets Honors The UA tennis team wrapped up its regular season 15-8 with four MAC victories, the most in team history and its first winning record since the 1995-96 squad finished 12-9. The sixth-seeded Zips lost 4-0 to third-seeded Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Championship indoors at Perrysburg Tennis Center. UA freshman Zara Harutyunyan was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and All-MAC First Team, marking the first time a freshman has earned the MAC’s Player of the Year award Sophomore Anna Baronayte was selected to the All-MAC Second Team. The University of Akron men’s and women’s programs each defended their Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May at Akron’s Lee Jackson Field. For the Zips, the women’s program has won four straight MAC Outdoor titles and eight straight between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Akron scored 147 points to win. For the men, Akron wins its secondever title, cruising to the victory with 197 points. Head coach Dennis Mitchell was named the MAC Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year for the second year. In addition to Mitchell’s honor, senior Stevi Large and junior Daniel Kinsey were honored for outstanding performances. Mack Rhoades, The University of Akron’s director of athletics since January 2006, has left UA for the same post at the University of Houston. “I want to express my admiration and gratitude for the many qualities that Mack Rhoades brought to the position of athletics director at The University of Akron during the past three and a half years,” says UA President Dr. Luis M.
