Honorary Alumni Award Recipients Honorary alumnus Robert J. Joyce applies the leadership skills he learned on the field of battle to his duties as chairman and chief executive officer of Westfield Group, a diversified financial services organization with more than $3.4 billion in assets. Joyce graduated from Villanova University in Philadelphia with a degree in business administration, and is a retired captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. His experience in the insurance industry spans 30 years and includes serving in various senior leadership positions in Reliance Insurance Group before joining Westfield in 1996. Westfield’s support extends broadly to many community organizations, including UA’s Medina County University Center and Team Northeast Ohio. Our next honorary alumnus leads a company known worldwide for its health care products. Joe S. Kanfer is chairman and CEO of GOJO Industries. Akron-based GOJO is a leading supplier of hygiene and topical pharmaceuticals for health care, institutional and consumer 2009. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University and a law degree at The Ohio State University. Bauer is very active in the community and has served on the UA College of Business Administration Advancement Council. PameLa & Joe S. Kanfer earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the University of Michigan School of Law. Kanfer serves on Akron Tomorrow, the Regional Development Board and is a past vice chairman of UA’s Board of Trustees. Another honorary alumnus is involved in health care—on the governmental level. Amy McGuire Porter has served as executive director of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, since 2002. In her role with the foundation, Porter works closely with national leaders in philanthropy, industry and advocacy, and with the NIH director, FDA, members of Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to her move to the Washington, D.C., area in the late 1990s, Porter, an Ohio native, served as director of development for the College of Engineering and director of major gifts at UA from 1991 to 1994.
