( feATure sTory ) Scholarships Mean the World to Many Generous benefactors open doors of opportunity for students The University of Akron and its students have benefited from a long and distinguished history of philanthropic support from generous benefactors. These treasured donors and friends play a vital role in assisting the university in achieving its vision: to forge a new gold standard for a truly excellent American university—one that provides access to a top-quality education for a broad range of citizens, then creates and adds value for our students, community and nation. With the largest endowment of any public university in northern ohio, the university positively impacts the lives of thousands of students, who go on to become key leaders and decision makers. Awards range in size from hundreds of dollars to complete, full-ride academic scholarships. These are but a few of the stories behind the hundreds of scholarships that enable students to achieve their goal of a college degree. Family Supports UA for Generations The Waldman family patriarch, Richard L. Waldman, Sr., was a gregarious, courageous, determined man, and a dedicated father with a special love for his family and friends. Richard pursued learning opportunities throughout his life and instilled an appreciation of education into his children and grandchildren. That appreciation evolved into a legacy that has helped dozens of students pursue life-changing college degrees at The University of Akron. The Waldman family legacy of supporting higher education at The University of Akron began more than two decades ago when Richard’s son, William, established the William C. Waldman Scholarship in Art in 1988. This fund benefits talented students in the School of Art who otherwise might not have the opportunity to pursue their life’s work. The Richard L. Waldman, Jr. Scholarship Fund followed in 1989. The fund was established by William Waldman in honor of his brother. Richard was a respected community leader, an ingenious businessman as evidenced by his contributions as vice president of the A. Schulman Company, and beloved by his family. The fund recognizes Richard’s commitment and contributions to the polymer industry by providing annual awards to four deserving undergraduate students majoring in chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering or mechanical polymer engineering. In 2004, the Richard L. Waldman, Sr. Scholarship was established by William and his wife, Lesley, in memory of William’s father. The scholarship is awarded annually with first preference given to a student who has graduated from an Akron Public High School. The recipient must evidence excellent ethical and moral behavior and exhibit an interest in learning. The Waldman philanthropic commitment to education continues today, helping students to realize their dreams and reach their highest potential. |8|
