Dean Stephen Cheng recently recognized Alan Woll from Diamond Polymers and Rick Juve from Americhem for their achievements in the polymer industry. Representatives from the two companies were hosted on campus to compare their research with research being done at UA, and to discuss potential symbiotic relationships. WAyNE COLLEGE news Dr. Hwi Joong Kim, chief technology officer and chief production officer for Hankook Tire Co. Ltd., received the College of Polymer Science Outstanding Alumni Award in October. Hankook Tire, with its global headquarters in Seoul, Korea, is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing tire manufacturers in the world. Hankook produces radial tires for passenger cars, light trucks, trucks, and buses and markets these products to 170 countries globally. According to the company, Hankook is the seventh largest producer of tires in the world in terms of revenues. The company employs more than 12,000 at about 30 locations. Hwi Joong Kim received a B.S. in applied chemistry from Seoul National University in 1971. Dr. Kim earned two degrees from The University of Akron: a M.S. in polymer science (1974) and a Ph.D. in polymer science (1990). Hwi Kim studied under Dr. Alan Gent during his doctoral studies. | 19 | New Student Life Building On Sunday, September 13, Wayne College celebrated the opening of its new Student Life Building, the first building added to the campus since the original structure was built in 1972. The 36,000 square foot building, which took 16 months to build, houses classrooms, a multipurpose room, bookstore, cafeteria and added recreational space for students. A MAgAzine for AluMni & friends of The universiT y of Akron < < < Chef Richard Alford, associate professor emeritus in Hospitality Management, recently taped an episode for the Food Network show, “Glutton for Punishment.” Alford was flown to Brown University in Rhode Island, where he helped the show’s host, Bob Blumer, compete in a food carving competition with Brown University engineering students. The taped episode will appear between January and March, 2010, on the Food Network.
