Ticknor, AAS ’73, AAS ’73, BS ’74, has received the Excellence in Public Services to the Arts award from the Dona Ana Arts Council in Law Cruces, NM. Ticknor has also been elected president of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (CARTA) National Trail Association. Max Rothal, JD ’57, Akron’s long-time law director whose ties to the city date back 50 years, is retiring. Family Leadership Exchange and on the steering committee of the Gay Community Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation. Kay W. Leath, MA ’85, Community Education Coordinator and Associate Lecturer at The University of Akron, will be added to the Plain Local Schools Alumni Association’s Hall of Distinction. 1960s Stefanena Kysor, BSED ’53, BSED ’61, MSED ’62, won six gold medals in swimming at the Empire State Senior Games in June in the 80- to 84-year old age group. 1970s Arlen P. “Al” Allender, BSIM ’71, has been elected as president of the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation. He is a member of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club and is also serving as a Kiwanis Lt. Governor. Sondra Asher, M.S. ’79, has retired after nearly 50 years as a teacher with Mansfield City Schools. Greg Carris, AAS ’77, retired as the City of Norton’s (Ohio) police chief on May 9, 2009. Larry Zimmerman, BS ’74, who played golf for the Zips, will end a 40-year relationship with Good Park when he retires as general manager. 1980s Stephanie Baronak, BS ’82, MBA ’84, was hired by DuraBante LLC in June 2009. As part of DuraBante’s operations team, Baronak will apply her broad experience to assist in the synchronization of both internal and external projects. Ronald A. Mikula, BS ’75, MA ’81, is retired from Akron Public Schools with 35 years of service. He is currently working for Walsh University, supervising student teachers from several school districts. Col. Andrew Molnar, BS ’87, took command of the 386th Expeditionary Maintenance Group from Col. Herb Phillips, during a “change of command” ceremony at the Rock Passenger Terminal on June 15, 2009. Colonel Molnar is deployed from Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where he is chief of the Current Operations Division of Air, Space and Information Operations at Air Mobility Command. James Bell, BS ’87, was honored at the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada conference. Brian Clevenger, BS ’88, teaches construction technologies at Jackson High School. Andrews Hooper & Pavlik (AHP) is excited to announce the addition of Gary A. Climes, BSA ’82, to its Greater Lansing office as partner, leading the firm’s business and IT consulting services. Vanessa L. Smith, BFA ’87, had her own ceramics show, “Waves of Thought,” open at the Perimeter Gallery in Chicago in October. Rita Fishel, BA ’73, teaches quilting on cruises. J. Thomas Henretta, BA ’68, JD ’75, has been selected by his peers as an Ohio Super Lawyer for the seventh consecutive year. Dave Vodika, MS ’85, has been named principal of Mansfield Christian High School. Cmdr. Thomas L. Meyer, BA ’73, has retired after more than two decades as a senior officer in the U.S. Navy. Meyer was an F-14 pilot, TOPGUN graduate and was Air Operations Officer on the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz during Operation Desert Storm. 1990s Dr. M. Todd Bradley, MA ’95, was recently awarded a promotion and tenure to Associate Professor of Political Science at Indiana University Kokomo. Robert W. Fisher, BS ’88, was recently named treasurer of the St. John’s Villa Board of Trustees. Roger Miller, BS ’73, recently joined the WilkesBarre-based professional consulting architecture/ engineering group as project manager. Ed Mowrer, BS ’75, has been named vice president of distribution operations for AEP Ohio. Sharon Geffken, BA ’86, has been named deputy executive director of social services at Summit County Children Services. Ferruccio Germani, MA ’81, composer and instructor in music at Penn State-Shenango, recently had one of his compositions played at international festivals in Italy and Peru. Halle Jones Capers, P.E., S.I.T., BS ’90, has been appointed to fill the position of Deputy Director of Highway Operations. The law firm of Roetzel & Andress is pleased to announce that Jeffrey A. Fickes, BS ’90, of the Akron office has been promoted to partner. Alec Papadakis, JD ’76, has been named chief executive officer of the United Soccer League. Rex Rogers, MA ’78, was named president of SAT-7 USA, Christian satellite television. Scott M. Schwartz, BA ’71, JD ’74, of Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria LLP in Buffalo, NY was elected vice president of the 3,793-member Bar Association of Erie County. Thomas A. Harakal, Jr., AAB ’84, has been named the Katharine F. Pantzer Fellow in Descriptive Bibliography at Houghton Library, Harvard University, for 2009-2010. Thaddeus Hete, BS ’81, has been named the City of Norton’s (Ohio) interim police chief. Jerry Larson, BA ’88, was appointed to fill the Akron Municipal Court opening created by the death of Judge Linda Kersker and took the bench on August 10, 2009. Larson has been with the city prosecutor’s office for 20 years. He is also committee member for the Akron Art Museum. He previously served as a member of the Child and Dr. Ronald Stanich, BAED ’70, BS ’70, of Massillon, Ohio received the 2009 Ohio Dental Association (ODA) Distinguished Dentist Award, the highest honor bestowed by the association, for his more than 30 years of service. Dr. John P. Henry, Jr., BM ’91, MM ’93, recently received his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) Degree in Music Education from the University of Houston in Houston, TX. He is currently the Director of the Music Program within the Department of Visual & Performing Arts at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC. | 26 |
