IN THE AISLES Grand Innovations at drupa 2008 Highlights from the International Show P re-drupa coverage started earlier this year at ISA, where key vendors teased us with announcements preparing us for innovative technologies. According to Messe Düsseldorf, drupa touts 1,971 exhibitors from 52 countries with an anticipated 400,000 visitors convening from around the globe. Vendors revealed additions to existing product lines and some exhibited new products. Here, we provide you with a sampling of what was shown on the trade show floor. Agfa Graphics debuted its newest additions—the :Anapurna XLS, :Anapurna Mv, and the :Anapurna M4f. The :Anapurna XLS is designed to provide photographic quality at 1,440 dpi. The printer is built around Agfa’s unique Universal Print Head (UPH) offers the image quality of the popular :Anapurna M, but adds a spot of flood varnish to further improve printed materials’ cosmetic appearance. The :Anapurna M4f features the same robust design as the :Anapurna M. It has four CMYK printheads and is positioned as a rigid printer with roll-toroll as an option. Circle 147 Canon created its largest stand ever for drupa 2008. With more than 2,000 square meters devoted to demonstrating its complete portfolio, the stand represented one of the largest demonstrations of Canon’s commitment to the graphic arts. In 2007, Canon’s large format devices underwent a 40 percent sales growth due to the roll out of 11 new products. The momentum continued at drupa with more products specifically designed for the 44-inch CAD sector—the imagePROGRAF iPF810 and iPF820. Scheduled to launch in September 2008, the five color dye and pigment printers combine fast output production speeds with efficient ink usage and a low total cost of ownership. Circle 148 Durst showcased a new thermoformable ink that is volatile organic compound (VOC) free and environmentally friendly. Rho TH ink is applicable on ABS, polystyrene, and thermoformable PVC for designs with 90 degree edges and more than four inches in depth. Durst Rho TH ink is compatible with the Rho 600, 700, and 800 series printers. The Rho Single Pass (SP) 60 industrial inkjet printer was also on display. It prints in CMYK on a range of different materials including cork, MDF, ceramic tiles, cardboard for packaging, plaster ceiling panels, and plastics. The printer uses 50 piezo inkjet nozzles per color with a combined total of 25,600 nozzles. The printer successfully meets the printing industry’s increased demands for low volume print runs, personalization, and print on demand. Circle 149 EFI previewed the VUTEk DS Series digital screenprinter. The flatbed UV printer is used in the production of point of purchase (POP) graphics. The DS Series produces sellable output at up to 6,000 square feet per hour (sf/h) and uses a unique UV-curing system. The user controllable zoned vacuum table is optimized for European and North American standard single-sheet graphic printing and supports the simultaneous printing of various sized substrates.
