Teacher to Teacher, October 2008 - (Page 9) you’re looking for the right book to use in your class, look for a text that • Presents physical geography as well as economic, political, cultural, and religious geography • Depicts the real color and atmosphere of each culture, including both the positive and the negative aspects • Includes eye-witness narratives from travelers ancient and modern • Addresses the Christian’s response to various global issues, such as poverty and AIDS Several helpful geography textbooks are available, but my favorite is the ninth-grade Cultural Geography, recently released by BJU Press. Following the theme of a world tour, the book includes a wealth of information and plenty of colorful photos, illustrations, and maps. First-hand accounts from travelers throughout the ages give students the chance to see each area of the world through the eyes of someone who was actually there. Understanding the geographical location of different countries and their contributions to the world economy will help your students make informed choices in the future. Geography is not just about canyons, rivers, and mountain ranges. It is about how land forms and natural resources affect the economy of every country, how the economy in turn affects politics, and how the political climate of each region contributes to the state of the entire planet. Help your students see beyond their school, their town, and their country. Open their eyes to the world. Rebecca Kenney is a publicist in Marketing Communications at BJU Press.
