Stan Hywet Hall and Garden Magazine - Fall/Winter 2008 - (Page 1) From the Dear s the glorious days of summer shorten in anticipation of a magnificent fall and winter, I wanted to take the time to share with you what a remarkable season we are having. Despite economic challenges, Stan Hywet continues to provide a myriad of offerings to both our membership and the public. This year’s Great Garden Adventure sponsored by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company; and A Period of Perspective:The Art of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling and its companion lecture series, underwritten by First Merit Wealth Management Services; have provided unique experiences across the Estate. Our new Kid’s Club has started strong, serving more than 30 families — its programs with Artist-in-Residence PR Miller are boasting our biggest crowds yet. The number of guests taking the Nooks & Crannies tour has increased and, despite warmer temperatures in the Manor House, visitors are enjoying both the new interactive Domestic Life & Leisure exhibit and Seiberling Secrets. The Ohio Shakespeare Festival has outdone themselves with stellar performances of Two Gentlemen of Verona, Hamlet and currently, I Hate Hamlet. Round that out with outstanding public events (including the Farmers’ Market), weddings and other rentals as well as one of our loveliest Gala’s in recent memory; and it is easy to understand why Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens was voted by the public as “The Best Place to Take Out of Towners” in the July 2008 issue of Akron Life & Leisure magazine. A President.. members anD frienDs, welcome Welcome New Board Member James Pickard • Still, in order to put our best face forward, we continue to care for the infrastructure of the Estate. The London Plane Tree Allée celebrated its official opening at the Annual Meeting of Members in June. The Chimney Restoration project is scheduled for completion in mid-August. And perhaps the most anticipated project begins at the end of October: the restoration of the West Terrace and Japanese Garden —the third and final phase of the storm water management system (see feature on page 16). We are also hard at work with internal restoration. The refurbishment of the Manor House Morning Room rug has just been completed. In the Music Room, trim and new hardware have been repaired in preparation for the installation of glass curtains (sheers) on the stage. The Carriage House bricks have been carefully repointed to ensure their longevity. And efforts to raise the needed funds for the restoration of our magnificent Aeolian Organ continue. Looking forward, the fall and winter seasons bring a host of activities, beginning with our Member’s Summer Fun Party in early September with entertainment by the legendary Punchy Atkins and his quartet (could there anything more lovely than the smooth sounds of jazz wafting over the lawns of Stan Hywet?) Ohio Mart (October 2-5) is just around the corner and the tireless volunteers and staff are promising one of the best ever. Stan Hywet, along with partners Kent State University and The University of Akron, will be hosting its first ever Symposium in mid-October entitled “On Display: Historic Homes and Great Estates,” followed by our second annual Horticulture magazine Symposium “Smaller Gardens: Real Solutions.” Lastly, in partnership with the University of Dayton’s Marian Library we will be exhibiting “The Art of the Nativity,” a fabulous display of crèches from around the world. When married with Deck the Hall, Stan Hywet will put its best holiday foot forward. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the endeavors of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. As we strive to become one of the finest historic house estates in this country, we must remember that even small steps lead us towards our goal.Your support, in all its forms — whether it be through the Annual Fund, Membership,Volunteering or simply visiting regularly — allows us to keep the Estate vibrant and changing. The more areas in which you can support us, the more it will help Stan Hywet as we continue to adapt and grow. Harry P.
