V By Kristen Hampshire isitors to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens are often surprised by the show of fall color awaiting them when they enter the estate, says Tom Hrivnak, Director of Horticulture. “They are captured by the beauty of the grounds, and we’ll hear comments that they never realized what was here in the fall,” he says. There are pyramids of pumpkins, gourds and mums in annual display beds. Ten acres of formal gardens throughout the property — including the Elliptical Garden, English Garden, West Terrace and London Plane Tree Allée — contain fall-inspired plantings like mums. “A lot of times, people just come out to see the fall foliage — the colors of the trees and woodland areas,” Hrivnak says. His personal favorites on the grounds are the grand white oaks and breathtaking fall vistas of the Cuyahoga Valley national Park. “That is what I look forward to most in the fall,” Hrivnak says. • 10 Goings-on at the Grounds Artists from The Cleveland Museum of Art painted the two-dimensional scarecrows that are placed around the grounds and hold clues about the estate.
