By Jenny Pavlasek art of the 12 e C holiday hristmastime is a festive time of the year at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. This year, it promises to be one of the most artistic as well, thanks to 30 Nativity scenes (or crèches) being displayed at this year’s Deck the Hall, November 28-December 28. The crèches are part of the “Art of the Nativity” display, which will adorn the museum’s first and second floors. “It’s the Christmas theme without any of the commercialism,” says Katie Campbell, Stan Hywet’s Vice President of Marketing. “And the artistic element is incredible.” The pieces are on loan from the University of Dayton’s Marian Library, which houses a collection of about 1,500 Nativity scenes, one of the largest in the United States. The Nativities hail from places as varied as Mexico and the Czech Republic, and include many predominately non-Christian countries such as Japan, India and Thailand. “When we chose pieces to include, we wanted to represent as many places and include as many [medium] as possible,” says Campbell. Visitors will find crèches made from materials as diverse as banana leaf, straw, wood, paper stan hywet hall 30 & gardens magazine
