Stan Hywet Hall and Garden Magazine - Fall/Winter 2008 - (Page 15) FALL INTO THE Festivities This year, the grounds of the Estate morph into a 70acre fall festival. From October 2-5, the magnificent oaks, elms, birches and sycamores surrounding the gardens serve as the perfect backdrop to a weekend of merriment. “It’s just beautiful,” says Mills. “It’s a great fall activity for people to enjoy.” A melting pot of artists from Ohio and surrounding states converge in tents along the north side of the Manor House to peddle their wares. Join the nearly 20,000 visitors that will weave through the seasonal blooms of the Great Garden to browse the goods by hand-selected artists. Glass work, pottery and seasonal items attract a bustle of excitement for eager shoppers, while wood crafts, stitchery and jewelry offer the perfect motivation to get an early start on holiday shopping. f e at u r e : o h i o m a rt OF THE SEASON 42nd Ohio Mart continues the tradition of Stan Hywet By Rachael Brugger A s the leaves turn to colors of red and gold and the autumn air picks up that crisp, cool bite, it is time to make way for traditions. October is a special time of transformation for the Akron community and its surrounding areas. Kids dress up as ghosts and ghouls for a night of trickery, the aroma of pumpkin pie seeps out of kitchen ovens, and Stan Hywet prepares for its annual Ohio Mart. The Women’s Auxiliary Board began Ohio Mart in 1966 as a way to raise money to sustain the Stan Hywet legacy. Over the years, it has raised more than $4 million dollars to support Stan Hywet. “It started with a small group of ladies,” says Judy Mills, publicity chair of Ohio Mart. “Now approximately 500 people volunteer to present this classic event.” www.stanhywet.org This year’s 120 exhibitors include Connor Goldsmith, Pelican Pottery, That Gourd Lady, Simply Smocking, ThistleDew and Laguna Blue. Members of the Women’s Auxiliary will have a beautiful display of dried flower wreaths and decorative floral arrangements as well as knitted goods for sale in the Carriage House. But the love of gardens, art and shopping will not be the only reason to attend this year’s festivities. The food tent will feature the Akron-area restaurants Totally Cooked, Moe’s and Acme Catering. Have a bite while enjoying the sounds of music being played around the grounds. Children can stop by the Pumpkin tent to paint their own pumpkins to take home or delight in creating “recycled art” with Stan Hywet’s 2008 Artist-in-Residence P.R. Miller.
