Stan Hywet Hall and Garden Magazine - Fall/Winter 2008 - (Page 23) ✂ a ro u n d t h e g ro u n d s INsPIred ArrANgemeNts the flower arranging parlor in the manor House on the estate is a flurry of activity today, just as it was during gertrude seiberling’s time. today, the flower guild uses the space to assemble artful arrangements for the home, and for the variety of events hosted on the grounds. “gertrude seiberling was a woman who walked in her gardens and enjoyed the gardens,” says sharon Hershey, a volunteer who works with bridal parties planning weddings at the facility. Hershey says guests can mimic some of the free-flowing arrangements that might be created from materials picked from stan Hywet’s english garden. In keeping with the unstructured, free-form nature of an english garden, she suggests hunting for material in meadows. goldenrod, wild aster, Queen Anne’s lace, curly willows and Harry Lauder walking stick blend to form a loose arrangement. From your landscape, try using hosta as filler, as it is still in full-leaf during fall. small cuttings from shrubs also add texture and interest, and asparagus left over from the garden has an open, blowy fern look that adds dimension to an arrangement. Here, she provides a few tips for making a fall arrangement with such “found materials”: 1. think odd. one, three, five—stick to odd numbers of flowers for interest. 2. start fresh. For longer-lasting arrangements, thoroughly clean your vase before adding fresh, tepid water. to counteract chemicals added to city water, drop a baby aspirin into the vase and dissolve before adding plant material. 3. Work from the back. to create a triangle arrangement (flat against the back that will face a wall), start inserting filler into the back of the vase. “start with taller flowers and reserve room for delicate filler,” Hershey says, naming Queen Anne’s lace. “Filler will graduate down into a triangular shape.” November eveNts Nov 3 Decorating Days estate is closed to the public Nov 6, 13 Getting Ready for Winter at Stan Hywet (Kids Club members only) time: 10 am Price: $10 per child with one adult Let’s help our animal friends get ready for winter.
