Stan Hywet Hall and Garden Magazine - Spring/Summer 2008 - (Page 1) welcome From the Dear members anD frienDs, W elcome back after what has surely seemed like the longest winter on record. April and May have brought the much anticipated signs of spring. Hyacinths, daffodils and snowdrops litter the grounds, reminding us that warmer weather and greener times are ahead. And for Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens “greener” is the operative word. The season kicks off with a fantastic exhibit of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling’s artwork, spanning her most prolific years in the 1930s and 40s. The curatorial staff has mounted a substantial body of Mrs. Seiberling’s work, entitled A Period of Perspective:The Art of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, in the spectacular Music Room. Everything is depicted, including portraits, travel memories, urban Akron interpretations and the “green, green grass of home,” Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. Generously sponsored by First Merit Wealth Management Services, the exhibition will remain on site through October. Following the enormous success of 2007’s “Treemendous Treehouses,” this www.stanhywet.org President.. year Stan Hywet will host “Great Garden Adventure,” an interactive outdoor escapade designed to promote healthy, imaginative outdoor play. Utilizing the recently restored Pleasure Drive extension, a network of paths has been installed to encourage our visitors to explore the periphery of the property. Imagination stations have been scattered along the pathways to help add interest for those looking for additional experiences. Sprinkle in some of the whimsical recycled creations of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens first artistin-residence, P.R. Miller, and one can be sure a good time will be had by all. “Great Garden Adventure” was originally inspired by a book I read last year called Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. Louv contends that the absence of nature in the lives of today’s children has resulted in some disturbing trends: obesity, attention disorders and depression, to name a few. Access to our grounds, along with quality time with friends and family, seems quite in line with the Seiberling legacy. In partnership with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Old Trial School, and thanks to the generous support of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and OMNOVA Solutions Foundation, we are proud to present Dr. Cheryl Charles, President (and co-founder, with Richard Louv) of The Children In Nature Network. This national movement endorses the awareness of “nature deficit disorder” and identifies ways to address this national epidemic. We hope you will join us on May 18th at the Happy Days Lodge to learn more about this important issue and our role in helping to heal this broken bond. The upcoming spring season, once again, promises a full lineup of fresh exhibitions, classes and public programs. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens now, more than ever, offers a wide variety of opportunities for you and your family to take advantage of your Membership. Come visit! Harry P. Lynch http://www.stanhywet.org
