We had many visits to Stan Hywet. These trips were special; a time when my grandma shared her love of history and gardening with me. We would tour the grounds together, and she would point out all of the things that she had in her own garden — from the specific flowers and roses to the various trees and bushes. We would always leave Stan Hywet and head to the local garden shop to pick up something new for her backyard, which included her own version of the waterfall that can be seen in the English Garden. These memories, to me, are priceless. I think of how she would have loved Stan Hywet’s evolution over the years. The events that take place today, such as Saturday Tea at Stan Hywet and Butterflies in Flight!, can be shared between a grandmother and granddaughter, or the entire family. These adventures and activities are a true representation of a lost art — the bonding between nature, history and humans. Stan Hywet started off as a treasure to F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling and, over time, it evolved into a local icon of diligence, love and family.
