Scottsdale is where the posh A Capital Affair In the charming, European- locks that separate the fresh waters of Salmon Bay from salty Puget Sound, an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The trailing watercraft creates a fanfare for those who picnic on blankets. Seattle’s Lake Union is buoyant neighborhood of floating homes and houseboats — quirky cottages painted in candy stripe cherry, lime, grape, lemon, taffy pink and mint. While you’re in town, cozy up at any of Seattle’s proud nooks, smelling of nutty freshroasted coffee. Or, poke your head into the original Starbucks, est. 1971, in downtown’s Pike Place Market. The store’s general-store façade contradicts its chain brothers and sisters; this historic district has set strict design guidelines. But you may be too busy perusing fresh produce at The Market to pine over coffee. Take your pick from an enticing pyramids of locally grown fare and visit the famous fish guys and ogle their latest catches. go to play and get pampered, and the snowbirds flock to enjoy a luxe retail Mecca and spa wonderland. This is la vie, desert style. Top-shelf ingredients like creamy avocado, rich chocolate, fresh cucumber and milky coconut are wrapped and rubbed on the body, lathered up, worked in and pounded out. This Zen is worth the trip. Body. Soul. Mind you, there’s much more to Scottsdale than spas. Emerald golf courses dominate the inherently sandy landscape. A dry summer heat pushes dedicated athletes out the door at sunrise, sometimes sooner. Vistas showcase desert mountains pocked with cacti — dusty, rustic, wide-open, the outskirts of town balance the hubbub within Scottsdale’s borders. Tour through Old Town Scottsdale, a Roy Rogers-style district that has undergone a makeover, albeit a historically correct one, and is now the hip spot to shop, eat and gather. esque neighborhood of Georgetown, tucked in Washington D.C.’s Northwest Quadrant, spend a summer day daydreaming among sweet blooms in one of the pocket gardens, or stroll along the C&O Canal. Discover unexpected treasures in kitschy stores and find “it” items in fine boutiques. Independent eateries and formal dining rooms alike cater to most every taste. Though the mood here is decidedly more relaxed than on The Hill, even the environment is well appointed, and its characters quite studious — Georgetown University is a neighborhood anchor. Of course, there are plenty of places to kick back and gather. The Capital City, after all, is abuzz with networking, socializing, negotiating, polling and protesting.
