I am particularly interested in event management and would love to be involved in such a major event. What can I be doing now to maximise my chances? RUBY A report by Experian was produced last year predicting the likely generation of employment by London 2012. This pointed out that many roles involving the running of the Games might be filled by professionals with specialist experience of similar major events. It predicted that specialist roles relating to the staging of the Games, including event management are likely to appear closer to the start of the games e.g. 12 to 18 months beforehand and will tend to be temporary roles. The report, with executive summary, is at www.lda.gov.uk (under London Employment and Skills Taskforce for 2012). The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is responsible for the staging of the Games. Vacancies are currently posted on www.london2012.com, look under ‘jobs’ at the bottom of the homepage. The site also includes opportunities with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) which is responsible for building the venues and infrastructure. Thousands of volunteers are going to be needed to help run the Games and it is possible to register your interest in the scheme via the London 2012 website. It may be worth considering this as an option and certainly keep an eye on the website for job vacancies and to stay up to date with developments. If you already have some experience of working in event management or have been involved in organising events on a voluntary basis, this will be a good foundation on which to build. Obviously, if you can acquire experience of sports events this will be useful but perhaps you can also try to gain insight into the staging of very large-scale events too. If you do not have prior relevant experience, now is the time to start developing this. Formal trainee schemes for graduates are unlikely, so getting into this work requires effort and ingenuity. If you need to research the area, you will find some general detail in the job description for Event Organiser at www.prospects.ac.uk/links/occupations. The section on entry requirements includes routes into the work and there is also detail on where to look for employer contacts and vacancies, plus useful resources to follow up. The site for the Association of Event Organisers at www.aeo.org.uk includes jobs, recruitment agencies and useful careers advice in the ‘Careers Centre’. The Creative Handbook www.chb.com includes details of event management companies, exhibition venues and so on, under ‘Live Events’. Prospects’ team of Careers Consultants are available to give graduates free individual advice by email Have you found agencies helpful? (See page 2 article) YES NO RESULTS NEXT TIME THE VOTE LAST TIME Interviewers aren’t trusted to make fair and just decisions. 70% didn’t have faith in the interviewers. 30% thought the selection decision would be right. HOW DO YOU RATE THIS PAGE? If finding paid work is difficult, consider voluntary work to start to develop relevant experience. Try www.do-it.org.uk for possible opportunities. Good luck.
