DONNA MILLER, EUROPEAN HR DIRECTOR, ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR YOUR VOTE Do you do more than an hour’s research for each job application? (SEE PAGE 2 ARTICLE) YES NO inadequate due to their lack of life experiences. In today’s world, attitudinal changes are imperative to being successful in the working world. LUCY HOYLE, GRADUATE RECRUITMENT MANAGER, TESCO Many companies hiring graduates are now doing so based on competencies and these are unrelated to age. At the same time, managers supervising employees that are older than them have the same challenges and often feel We look at applicants purely on the basis of their ability and regardless of age – if we think you have what it takes to be a success in Tesco, we would love to hear from you. In line with the age discrimination act we do not ask for age on our application form and we value the contribution of all people regardless of age. As such, there is no UCAS point criteria for our generalist (stores and distribution) programmes. Our selection tools are put together to assess for competencies needed for the role, rather than catering to what would appeal to one particular audience. We try and communicate with potential students both young and mature. Our communication plan includes a combination of on and off line media and is not solely focused on campus or student publicity. We encourage applications from diverse groups to ensure that our staff are a reflection of the local population and the customers in our shops.
