Graduate Prospects - 20 August, 2008 - (Page 17) One of the reasons for the proliferation of business and management courses is their widespread applicability. In short, anyone who is employed is part of a business and therefore potentially stands to benefit from a business course. Law graduate Rebecca Heron found she was losing out to business studies graduates when it came to interviews and wanted to gain some practical knowledge about management. So she signed up for LUMS’ MSc in Management. ‘I think in some ways people do look at these Masters as a sort of conversion course for people who have no grounding in business to get a start in the area,’ says Rebecca. ‘It’s ideal for that because it gives you some work experience as part of the course, a theoretical background and because the job market is so competitive now, it’s an essential way of gaining an advantage.’ There’s confirmation for Rebecca’s view in Prospects’ What Do Postgraduates Do? survey – it shows that over 55% of business and management graduates are working in management positions within just six months of graduation. Postgrad blogger ‘I am cash poor. So how, by golly, am I going to afford a research trip to the Lone Star State.’ GRAHAM FOSTER ON TRIPPING So, if you’re looking for the sort of course that can get you onto the management ladder, although an MBA might be the first letters on your lips, don’t forget that other business and management courses can also spell success.
