PhD and other research options can also start in January. If a doctoral research opportunity is offered as a pre-planned funded package, it can be possible to find a place late in the day. This is not likely where an aspiring research student first has to design their own project and find a supervisor. In most cases applying for Masters courses is straightforward. Some insist on 2:1s and particular degree subjects but many don’t. Demand for places is greatest where possibilities of funding exist. In such competitive situations departments may wants to see candidates face to face, though in most case the undergraduate course record, personal statement and references are sufficient. Universities’ general practice is to fill postgraduate courses on a first-come-first-served basis where applicants are judged to be of the necessary calibre, so the remaining places on a course can disappear overnight. With the large expenses of study to be found, no one is going to rush off to university willy-nilly. But there is still time after applying and receiving an offer for a January start to investigate finance and other practicalities further. Which means that if you are thinking about becoming a postgraduate soon, getting in touch with some university departments should start now.
