But with agencies’ books overflowing with candidates it gets ever harder to hold their attention. So how can we get the most out of them? Richard Summerfield, graduate of the University of Leicester, ended up almost stalking his consultant. He spent a year temping and says he got messed about a lot. ‘It took about three months to find a placement. By that point I was phoning the agency every day so I think they were a bit sick of me.’ For temping, Richard suggests spreading your CV as widely as possible. ‘Stay in touch after that. Make a point of phoning up regularly to find out if there’s anything going and when you do phone make sure you speak to the same person. That way they won’t forget you.’ But Steve Shacklock, managing director of multi lingual recruiter Euro London warns that you can spread yourself too thinly. ‘Yes, you can register with a range of different agencies but the key to successful recruiting comes from building a strong relationship.’ Steve advises that you stick to agencies where the person you talk to is professional, thorough and interested. ‘If you’re happy with the initial contact then meet them face to face and treat this meeting like a real interview.
