Prospects 2008 MBA Guide - (Page 19) UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT MBA CLAUDIO AVRILI IS LOOKING FOR A NEW CHALLENGE Claudio completed his first degree in Computer Science and Accounting in 1990 at the University of Manchester. He joined Mercury Communications as a graduate trainee, where he stayed for five years before joining a small IT consultancy as an Oracle DB Consultant. After seven years as a freelance consultant, Claudio bought a small business in Penzance, investing his own capital in the venture and building it up. He sold the business for a profit in 2005 and worked for two manager, using his experience as a professional member of the British Computer Society. Looking for another challenge, he decided to take an MBA. ‘I felt my experience in both large and small businesses had given me good management experience, but that an MBA could really fill the holes that existed in my knowledge. I also thought that maybe my experience might assist my fellow students with their studies,’ he says. Claudio knew Leicester, having stayed there with friends on numerous occasions, and after investigating the opportunities the University had to offer, he decided it was the best choice for him. He is self-funding his MBA but says he is already benefiting from the programme. ‘I have worked with an excellent team to give a full PowerPoint presentation in a marketing seminar. We have also recently handed in our first assignment – a summary and critique of an excellent article written jointly by two of the School of Management experts, Professor Steve Brown and Dr Geoffrey Lightfoot.’ Claudio feels that, in addition to learning the skills of academic writing and reading, the programme is holistic view of business management. ‘It is instilling in us the ability to take theory, consider its practical application, analyse and comment, then ultimately consider its validity and value to the epistemology,’ explains Claudio. When he has completed his MBA, he will be looking again, he says, for fresh challenges. ‘I feel the Leicester MBA is really opening up the vista, providing the skills essential for management in any form of commercial or non-commercial organisation. It adds value to my existing experience in project management, though moving out of the IT arena for fresh fields has its attractions.’ Aware that the true test of the value of the MBA will come when he is working again and using what he has learned, Claudio nevertheless feels confident it will have been worth it. ‘Do I find it value for money? My impression so far of the course and its facilities ensures that my answer is – absolutely!’ PROSPECTS MBA GUIDE 19 years as a Prince 2 Practitioner and a freelance project fostering team working and giving the students a
