Prospects 2008 MBA Guide - (Page 2) INTRODUCING THE MBA ADDING VALUE The MBA has long been marketed as a longterm investment for a career and although the cost can initially deter, MBA graduates are still achieving substantial financial gains and career opportunities. MBA courses set out to equip managers to rise to senior positions in the private or public sectors, with the development of strategic thinking being of central importance. The programme is also attractive to those looking to set up in business on their own. But pursuing an MBA is not a decision to be taken lightly. As most MBA students are self-funded, study is often fitted in around a part-time or even full-time job. The hard work involved on an MBA programme should not be underestimated. Whilst it may not offer a concrete guarantee for the FINANCIAL REWARDS As well as gaining career perfect job, for the majority of people, the hard work satisfaction, MBA graduates are often rewarded is worth it in the end. An MBA can open up networks financially. The Association of MBAs has conducted to careers never before imagined and for some jobs the qualification is a prerequisite. Career enhancement or the option of a career change is often mentioned by MBA students as being the major reason to study for the degree. The MBA is seen as being the ideal vehicle for change due to its general management skills and its application to recent business models. At present the trend is for MBA graduates to move to smaller or medium size enterprises in the years following their graduation especially as their careers develop. These roles tend to be more general management or corporate strategy roles in senior professional positions. Three to five years following graduation, 59% of respondents reported reaching senior management positions and above. 2 PROSPECTS MBA GUIDE several salary surveys over recent years, with the latest survey showing an average salary amongst accredited MBA graduates of £65,600. The Association has conducted a further survey to investigate how these figures have changed and it appears that the trend is still positive. The average pay rise immediately following graduation for an accredited graduate was 18%. This figure increased to 53% three to five years after graduation, with 11% of respondents earning over £100,000 per annum. Graduates on the highest salaries tend to be those who have completed a two-year full-time MBA, suggesting earning power is also linked to method of study. However, all graduates studying an MBA are reported to have increased their earnings on completion of the degree. http://www.mbaworld.com
